FASTING
In His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus gives His followers instructions on how to fast, specifically telling them not to make a show of fasting like others in their culture (Matthew 6:16–18)
Why do we fast?
Fasting is about stepping away from things we enjoy—like food—and using that time to focus more on prayer. It helps us hear God more clearly and get better at sensing His direction in our lives.
Starting Sunday, January 26, join us for three days as we seek God for our families, our church, and our world.
Options for Fasting:
Daniel Fast
What is it?
The Daniel Fast, based on the fast observed by Daniel and his Hebrew companions in Daniel 1, involves the consumption of only fruits, vegetables, and water.
Sounds interesting. What was that all about?
Daniel and his companions found themselves in a dire situation, in need of God's intervention and favor. Rather than resorting to disobedience or compromise, they chose to honor God's commands by fasting, consuming only fruits, vegetables, and water. This act of faith and obedience was a way for them to seek God’s guidance and favor. The outcome of their decision is detailed in Daniel 1:15-17, which highlights how God honored their commitment.
What are the specifics?
The fast is simple and straightforward. Individuals consume only fruits, vegetables, and water. During this time, they also dedicate themselves to prayer and focus on deepening their connection with God.
There are numerous variations on how to do this fast.
Indeed, many people have taken the concept from Daniel 1 and adapted it in various ways. However, our intention is to adhere as closely as possible to the example set in Scripture, maintaining the original simplicity of the fast as outlined above
24-Hour Complete Fast
What is it?
The 24-Hour Complete Fast is a straightforward, water-only fast that individuals commit to observing for one 24-hour period. This is typically practiced from sundown to sundown or from sunrise to sunrise.
How does it work?
This fast is simple in nature. For the duration of the fast, which lasts 24 hours, participants abstain from consuming anything except water. During this time, it is encouraged to dedicate oneself to prayer, seeking a deeper connection with God. It is also beneficial to extend this focus on prayer during the non-fasting days as well.
Content Fast
What is it?
For those who may be unable to fast food due to physical limitations or health concerns, we offer an alternative fast that focuses on the intake of digital content instead.
How does it work?
Before beginning, individuals choosing this type of fast are encouraged to pray and seek God’s guidance in determining what specific digital content to abstain from. Many individuals opt to fast from streaming services, social media, video games, YouTube, or some combination of these platforms. The essential components are: (1) the item chosen for fasting must hold personal significance, and (2) a clear commitment should be made at the outset of the fast.In His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus gives His followers instructions on how to fast, specifically telling them not to make a show of fasting like others in their culture (Matthew 6:16–18)
A Fasting Prayer:
Gracious and Loving Father,
We come before You with humble hearts, seeking to know You more deeply during this time of fasting. You are the Creator of all, the source of life and truth, and we long to experience Your presence in a more intimate way. As we set aside our physical needs, may our spirits grow hungrier for You, for Your wisdom, Your understanding, and Your love.
Amen
